Planting a University
Every time we plant is not just a bet on growing seasons - it’s a vision of the future.
Is this a picture of plowing, of horitculture, a vision for a new building - or maybe even a vision of a new culture? Part of Space and Culture is based at University of Alberta and supported by the Faculty of Arts, which is celebrating its centennial. This astonishing photo of the premier of the newly-formed province (Alexander Rutherford) and the founding president of the university (Henry Marshall Tory) literally break sod for the University’s Arts Building, September 1909, in what was then farmland and is now at the centre of the city and region.
Click on the image to see what is on this site almost a century later. If we assume that the next century will bring just as great a change, what cities and institutions are we planting today, for tomorrow?
