Ambient

The racket is awesome. Even after a month it is hard to separate out the simultaneous songlines. The amplified sounds of a cheering crowd captured on DVD rise over the barking of dogs and the calls of children and birdsong. Disagreement over the choice of music leads others to add their own amplified tracks. Overlooking ‘the village’ in Salvador, an throbbing, invisible cloud of sound anulls other impressions and appreciations. Like birdsong, ambient sound affirms territory, ownership.

It crowds out then concentration necessary to mount any other activity (such as this blog). Pacode (“packodge”), hache (“haché”), someone singing along, a small, locked out dog…. the sound level would make a large club proud. Buts it no party, its just that there is nothing to do (ie. No jobs). Its an afternoon in ‘the village’ – “Boa!”

OK - How do I upload a sound file into blogger?

Hi Rob, the words are “pagode’ (kind of samba) and “axé” (”samba-reggae” style from Salvador). Axé means “energy” from de candombé religion. Salvador is a “musical city” for sure, and the music here is much more than a product of “unemployment”.

Thanks for the corrections! I didn’t mean that music was a product of unemployment. The music continues every day, full blast - so more another time on relationships between consumption and production in everyday life and in the economies of the city.

    Rob,

The are several ways to add audio to your blog. One such way is by using Hipcast/Audioblog. For a little more information about their service check out their Post to Blog tour.

Or for an example of their tool in use check out this example on Chris Brogan’s blog. Chris is the new media community firestarter for Network2.tv.

Funny thing Rob. I trully believe that if you lived in another neighborhood you would have another point of view from the city. Because it isn’t all of us that likes pagode, axé, or even to listen it so loud. There a few quiet places here that you can only hear the strong sound of the sea. But, it’s like what André said: it’s a musical city…
