Lisbon’s Wonderground

After a few minutes browsing their hand-drawn website, reading their call for papers, a vague feeling of looking in on a playful, creative moment starts to brew. How come they are having so much fun? We worry about how to inspire and initiate students into the wonders of our fields, but what Canadian university departments genuinely shout “we are wonderground!” or accept student’s enthusiasm for problem-centred and inquiry-based research? Lost in phrases like “integration of research and teaching”, survey courses get offered even to graduate students. These are really rather remedial and about filling instructional time with the paranoia that the next generation might not know the doxa or can’t be trusted to discover - and judge - what is valuable.
