Space and Mobility

Hi, back from the dead, I am (we are) soliciting interest in space and mobility. At ICAN/NTU, we are currently holding a seminar series on mobility with invited speakers. We seek to elaborate on this with four international symposia. This is what we thought might be at stake. We’re inviting any comments, suggestions, criticisms, annotations etc etc. as nothing has been decided yet. I am particularly keen to know what kind of non-academic interest might be ‘out there’.

Session: Space and Mobility
“Questions of mobility inevitably intersect with conceptions of space and spatialization. From Le Corbusier’s hypermodernist conceptions of urban flows to Deleuze and Guattari’s radical political philosophy of nomadism, we can recognise a continuity of concern over spatiality as first and foremost that which shapes mobility and by virtue of which mobility materialises and matters. Simultaneously, however, the space/mobility nexus also reveals the co-dependency of both on time and temporality and especially on speed, immediacy and immanence. This session seeks to deliver a theoretical and conceptual deepening of issues regarding mobility whilst simultaneously making these empirically and practically relevant by focusing on particular spatial manifestations of mobility such as airports, urban architecture and planning. Questions that will be raised concern the spatio-temporal limits of mobility and their socio-cultural, economic and political implications. We will also look at means by which systems of governance appropriate spatiality to curtail mobility, particularly through the use of security concepts and distinctive technological devices such as biometrics.”
