Maybe it’s because I’ve spent lots of time in places where there were none, and I could barely contain my excitement upon seeing one again, but I think toilets are amazing.
They may not always be graciously named, but then again, how often do we think about the toilet’s role in making a more gracious society? And while surely we all have tales of the world toilets we have known – when was the last time you considered toilets as microcosms of society at large? Or that toilets have inspired poetry?
Last week, I sat glued to the couch watching How It’s Made visit the Crane plumbing pottery division. I mean, did you know all their toilets – from the no-seat Economiser to the Cranada ULF (”with superb design for the professional”) – are lovingly hand-crafted over a four-day period? And today, the NY Times profiles the technology behind American Standard’s flush – which you can experience first-hand at Flush Fest ‘05!
