"a summersault between activist and terrorist, social deviant and conscientious citizen, radical and moralist"

The Ottawa Art Gallery
Off Grid
8 April 2005 to 5 June 2005

“Off Grid is an arts presentation devoted to the margins of urban culture, including graffiti, gangs, consumer excess, detritus, and street interventions. The project will explore alternatives to and subversions of mainstream culture through a thought-provoking program of performance, visual and media art. It will highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of metropolitan life, examining ideas of inclusion and exclusion, collaboration and intervention, consumption and waste in the context of public space and community. A diverse range of local, national and international artists practicing in various media will participate in both on- and off-site events. An exhibition in the contemporary galleries of the Ottawa Art Gallery will feature artworks that respond to the nature of urban living such as the effects of consumerism, the structuring of communities, collaboration and intervention, and sustainable cohabitation. A program of off-site public performance and interventions will consider similar themes while engaging directly with the public.”

The curators also have a blog where they discuss grids and such.
