The skin of the city

indexed city: relief space

“relief space is a research laboratory focusing on the everyday experience of urban space. the key issue of relief space is the conception of an interface which enables inhabitants and visitors of the city to directly and sensually access and negotiate data which determine the identity of city space.

electronic media transform the memory of the city: processes of everyday interaction with the city can be electronically archived. events can be replayed on demand, modified or even simulated. imaginary events can be simulated and established in the memory of the city. the possibility for the inhabitants of the city to experience the reality or identity of the city they live in, is successively removed from city space itself and exported into data space.

relief space aims at the relocalization of data to urban space in order to enable inhabitants to locally access and negotiate urban identity >>>> relief space. relief space reinscribes the surfaces of city space by temporarily linking them to the body of the inhabitant of the city >>>> writing on the skin of the city. the predominant visual skin of the city is fractured by a sensual and acoustic experience of city space >>>> [re]reading the skin of the city.”
