Cities in Time

The Maps Descriptive of London Poverty are perhaps the most distinctive product of Charles Booth’s Inquiry into Life and Labour in London (1886-1903). An early example of social cartography, each street is coloured to indicate the income and social class of its inhabitants.

Around Manchester: Views of Change and Continuity

This exploration of Manchester before the Industrial Revolution features material from the Library’s collections ranging from an original fifteenth-century lease to illustrations and plans published over the last two centuries. With the aid of modern photographs, it relates historic streets, squares and buildings to an older Manchester which has largely been swept away. It moves through time from the days of pre-Norman settlement to recall the Roman fort, the Norman castle, the Civil War siege of the city and the more refined era of the eighteenth century, concluding by relating survivals from the past to present-day developments including the aftermath of the terrorist bomb of 1996.
